Clams and mussels are filter feeders. They will continuously pump aquarium water threw
there shells and eat all the food suspended in the water column. They burrow down in
your gravel and help to keep the water clearer. I would not say that they keep it cleaner
but clearer. In the process they do add some bio-load and should be treated as adding any
other live animal to a system. This does not mean they are not a benefit. They will clear
up cloudy water and help aerate the gravel for your plants. I could see this as a benefit
for a tank with a messy eating fish that is always blowing "smoke" around when its eating.
